Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. –Proverbs 26:4, 5.
There has been, of late, a kind of renewed “zeal” for the flat earth theory (especially on www.youtube.com). Quite a few people are very caught up in it; unfortunately, this includes many professing Christians. There has been a general awakening to the fact that much of what we are routinely taught has been false. This is not the case, however, when it comes to the shape of the earth. Not everything is a conspiracy, and we Christians ought to be more discerning- even though the deceits of Satan are often quite clever.
Revealing the shape of the earth doesn’t seem to be high on God’s priority list, and it shouldn’t be for us, either. Some have claimed that the Bible supports the flat earth theory, but it never does. These claims come from men who have added (Proverbs 30:5, 6) their own private interpretations (II Peter 1:20) onto the actual words that God preserved for us. There is only one verse in scripture that specifically identifies the shape of the earth, and here it is;
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?... Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: -Isaiah 40:18, 21 and 22.There you have it in the bold type I have added- the earth is ROUND.
Hadn’t mankind gotten past the flat earth notion a long time ago? The notion that a round earth is some type of NASA fabrication, media hype, or government programming just doesn’t hold up. The discovery of the true shape of the earth came some 500-600 years ago. These were genuine scientists, who worked diligently to discover the truth long before we had airplanes, satellites, or the internet. And far from going along with some government agenda, these men put their lives on the line to challenge the notion of a flat earth. These were men like Galileo, Copernicus, Newton and Kepler. You should read about what some of these went through in bringing forth the scientific evidence that proved a spherical planet.
And why haven’t we heard about a flat earth from the notable individuals of more modern times? Men like Werner von Braun, Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, or Stephen Hawkings? Why didn’t Charles Lindbergh or Amelia Earhart testify about a “flat earth” discovery on their flights? We could also cite military leaders like Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas McCarther; neither one ever gave a hint at traveling around anything other than a globe.
So what is behind this resurrection of the “flat-earth” theory? People are relying on personal, superficial experience to challenge the centuries’ long testimony of science. Mankind has strayed far from God by using such reasoning. It is really just the original sin, once again.
NOW the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. –Genesis 3:1-6. Bold type added for emphasis.
We all know the story pretty well, don’t we? God told Adam and Eve not to eat from the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” from Genesis 2:9. The serpent tempted Eve by awakening in her a desire to be like God, and determine what was right or wrong for herself. We see this type of temptation reflected in almost every sin. In essence, we try to become like God, and decide what is really good or bad for our own lives (rather than following God’s Words). Our wicked, deceitful hearts tell us what they want, and we rationalize why it is acceptable.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. –Proverbs 21:2.
For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. –I Corinthians 11:31.
Those who now tout the “flat-earth” theory are doing so because of sensory experience, and not scientific data- but they may sound very convincing. The key is that our imaginations are nearly unlimited in their potential, like God; but they are tainted by our sinful nature.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. –Genesis 11:4-6. Our imagination can fashion anything, even the rationale for a flat earth.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. –Genesis 8:21. God shows us here the nature of our imaginations. Apart from salvation through Jesus Christ alone, there is no good in anyone (Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:10-12). Bold type again was added to emphasize.
What if someone tried to tell you that the color of blood was actually purple? In their argument, they would claim that the instant blood meets the outside atmosphere, it oxidizes, and the color changes to red. This would be very hard to disprove! They could also provide unlimited examples of this, and back it up with seemingly authentic scientific research data. Yet in the end, what would be gained through our findings about the real color of blood? Absolutely nothing! The shape of the earth is quite irrelevant in our daily lives, but God does want us to stand for the truth (II Corinthians 13:8), and be discerning. His Word also gives us guidance in regard to such matters, and we need to follow it. Consider the following verse;
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. –Proverbs 17:24. Sounds a lot like the flat earth considerations, doesn’t it?
Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge. –Proverbs 14:7. We Christians need to know where to draw the line in arguing such matters.
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. –Ephesians 5:15-17. Can the “flat earth” discussion really be of any value to a believer?
Let me close with an outstanding scripture God has given us to apply to topics like this. Really, the “flat earth” is only one of many examples of false science in the last days. As for me, God has declared in the Bible that the earth is a circle. I also know well that I can travel AROUND the world, and come back to where I started: I know that our planet is round! But for some 500 years, the shape of the earth has also been proven and accepted by scientists without peer, and by many unquestionably reliable witnesses. That’s good enough for me. There isn’t any good reason for Christians to engage in debates of this kind, and much bad can come from it.
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. –I Timothy 6:20, 21.
